2007 - OVER 1000 ILLINOIS COMMUNITIES ARE NOT
COVERED BY SMOKING BANS -
DISTORTED CLAIMS BY TOBACCO CONTROL AND MEDIA

Current claims by the news media, Illinois legislators and tobacco control crusaders that 43-44 of our Illinois cities and communities are covered by draconian smoking bans is being purposely promoted to imply that smokers should give up the fight because such a "large" number of bans have been passed. That number is a joke!

We have over 1100 communities in Illinois and 1000 of them have NOT chosen to impose local smoking bans in violation of private property rights and based on the junk science of Environmental Tobacco Smoke and our previous Surgeon General's unfounded claims.

Of the listed communities that have passed new bans, based upon the Illinois Clean Air Act - Home Rule amendment enacted a little over one year ago in January of 2006, several have permanently enacted exemptions, including bars.

Also, of 102 counties located in Illinois, only Cook County has enacted a severe smoking ban and McLean county has instituted one in unincorporated areas (while still exempting bars).

Now, our Illinois legislature is attempting to again remove Home Rule authority from municipalities, less than a year and a half since they were given this authority. It certainly seems like tobacco control is leading our elected Illinois representatives around by the nose and public health is not the primary issue.

If you view our list and then view the details below it for the smoking bans listed by Smoke Free Illinois, the bans don't look as widespread or impressive, considering the 45 communities that have already totally rejected or only passed limited smoking bans in Illinois.
